Drum Rack

The Drum Rack is the full drum machine: kits, beats, fills, a tempo, and an editor for building patterns of your own. The same engine drives the Drums pedal drives from the pedalboard, with everything on the surface instead of under three knobs. We will move across the rack from left to right:

Preset

This section lets you choose both a kit and a beat to perform.

Kit

This knob chooses a drum kit with specific types of sounds like rock, jazz, or techno. You can also tap on the knob to choose from a menu.

Beat

This knob chooses a pattern that is specific to the kit. You can also tap on the knob to choose the beat from a menu.

Add

The add button lets you save the currently defined custom beat into your library by prompting you for a name.

Save

If you already have a pattern, you can save your changes to the current preset, overwriting it.

Out

This button opens a menu that lets you determine if the drum machine outputs its beats as MIDI note events and on what MIDI channels. It also lets you choose a sound bank used to create the drum sounds.

Parts

This section lets you specify different beats for different parts of a song. For instance, you may start the intro with one beat and then switch to another for the verse and another for the chorus. You can easily change these and the drum machine configuration will be saved for each part.

Fill

This section is where you can add fills into the beat as it plays. This is quantized to the measure and beats For instance, if you tap on the the 2-measure fill at the fourth beat of the song, the app waits until the next "3" to start the fill. This lets you throw in 1, 2 and 4 beat fills in your song. Options include:

  • 1 Beat queues a one-measure fill at the end of the measure.
  • 2 Beat queues a two-measure fill at the end of the measure.
  • Bar queues a full measure fill with its duration dependent on the time signature.
  • Hold lets you customize how long a fill lasts by holding the button until the fill should end. Be nice to the drummer!

You can also customize fills by tapping and holding on the 1 Beat, 2 Beat, and Bar buttons to open the Custom Fill Menu.

Pattern

Here is where you can visualize the beat. The LED buttons light up as the beat plays. You can also edit the beat by tapping in this area.

Control

Here is where you can toggle the drum machine on and off as well as control [beat sync]. The default is that the drum machine will play in sync with the master beat clock which runs the metronome, arpeggiator, MIDI clock, etc. Tap on the play button to start the beat and tap again to stop. If you start a fill and then tap stop, the fill will complete and crash on the downbeat like a real drummer.

You can configure all aspects of the drum rack by tapping on the menu button.
